A couple of months ago I went along to something called an Innovation Partnership. I was quite excited about it - I'm a great believer in trying new ways of doing things, opportunities for thinking outside the box and a chance to discuss ideas with new people. One good thing that came from it was meeting up with Suzy Rogers of the Women in Education Network - she is someone I met many years ago when I helped her organisation to successfully apply for Lottery funding. Suzy invited me to speak to her organisation at one of their dinners and this I did a couple of weeks ago.

I recently read about renowned entrepreneur, Guy Kawasaki who outlines 10 Tips for Successful Innovation.

Tip No1 Make Meaning

One of the most important keys to innovation is to make meaning - to develop meaningful products, projects and services for long term success. Innovation is about improving people's lives and making them more productive.

The secret here is to plan where you want to be in the long term not just about looking for ways to make money fast. You need to think about why you want to do something, consider the starting point, what you are good at and what might get in the way of your success.

Tip No2 Make a Mantra

A business or organisation's mantra shouldn't consist of a superfluous mission statement, as these are often too long or not memorable or indicative of where the focus lies. Instead you should come up with a few words that simply explain why you exist. Always remember that it is the little extras: making people feel special, the willingness to go the extra mile, the follow-up call that are huge.

I'm not so sure if I totally agree with this, but I think I understand where he is coming from. If we wait until our product or service is absolutely perfect, we will probably never get it off the ground.

Life is a journey full of learning experiences. It doesn't matter what road we are on, if we just sit in the middle of it, sooner or later we will get knocked down.

Tip No6 Polarise people

Don't be afraid to polarise the consumer base. You need to be clear about the market your in. Just think of the most successful business out there, they frequently generate polarity. If you were to stand on a street corner and look at all the different makes and sizes of cars that go past - they are all generally quality vehicles, but BMW has a different market to the Ford Ka.

Tip No7 Let a hundred flowers blossom

Even if the wrong people are currently your customers in large numbers, you still don't have a problem, according to Kawasaki. You have to plant flowers everywhere, because you don't necessarily know who your next or best customers will be.

You have to ignore the Naysayers when bringing you innovation to fruition. Kawasaki says there are usually two types of bozo: the loser an the well-to-do, slickster rich guy, the latter being the most dangerous.You can't assume someone is smart just because they are rich.

The 1 and 4 digits are designated as the "cold digits".

The next step in the process of this filtering is to combine these hot and cold digits to create a list of playable Pick 3 numbers that will become the next winning number. The formula looks like this [hot digits + cold digits = next winning number] or [2 & 6 + 1 & 4]. The resulting playable numbers are 261, 264, 214, and 614.

But here is why these filters don't work. These filters actually make these Pick 3 numbers and the Pick 3 lottery player an "automatic loser"; even before the lottery player begins to create the list of playable numbers. "In an unusual deal that links two ailing industries, EMI Group Ltd. will provide music and memorabilia for new instant-win games designed by Pollard Banknote Ltd., which runs lotteries in 45 states and territories around the world," Ethan Smith wrote.

"Pollard, of Winnipeg, Canada, is creating a line of music-themed, scratch-off lottery games that it is currently marketing to state lotteries," the Journal reported. "In the new games, players can win either cash or prizes such as album downloads and ring tones."

That's right: it is no joke.

With 26 years of working in the lottery industry, I believe I am qualified to state in no uncertain terms that lotteries partnering with the music giant, EMI Group Ltd., to provide prizes of music and memorabilia for a new instant-win scratch-off ticket game is one of the worst ideas yet.

"The idea is to lure younger players to a pastime that traditionally has appealed to people who are around retirement age," the Journal reported. Doug Pollard, vice president of lottery management services at Pollard went on to tell the newspaper, the demographic "is getting older every year. That's been one of the big challenges."

First, let me just say that it is irresponsible and reprehensible for state lottery officials to entice young people to gamble. I also know through interviews and research that people buy lottery tickets to win money not prizes -- especially not music, most of which can be downloaded free on the Internet.

Pollard told the newspaper that "after growing consistently by around 8 percent annually, lottery-ticket sales fell sharply in many states during the second half of 2008."

When lottery ticket sales decline, lottery officials try desperate means to reverse the decline -- usually by changing the number field and increasing the odds against winning. They may also alter the division of the prize pool so that the greatest percentage of money in the prize pool goes toward paying the first prize jackpot, leaving very little money for the other prize categories. Both moves are bad.

Lottery players do not like to have the number field of the game they play changed or tampered with. Germany has had the same successful 6/49 game going for more than five decades -- since 1955. Lottery officials generally have an incorrect opinion of their ticket buyers, thinking that they all want to chase huge jackpots. For that reason, the prize pool is divided in such a way that every game is a jackpot-driven game.

Now that every lottery state has either Powerball or Mega Millions with huge jackpots, the other lotto games the state offers should have the greatest percentage of the pay-outs go toward the lower tier prizes, not the jackpot.

The secret that eludes American lottery officials is that a lottery player feels like a winner even when winning or 0 from time to time. But with the current structure of prize pools, this happens too seldom.

If we flip the coin five times, we still don't know with any certainty what the next result will be.

But let's take flipping the coin twenty times (I'm doing this whilst writing this). Here are my results:

So, that is twelve heads, and eight tails. Given that there are only two possible outcomes, and we have a (small) history of previous results, we can deduce that the PROBABILITY of getting a tail in the next flip is higher than that of getting a head.

Now, let's apply this to winning the lottery! Lotteries have now been around for many years, and we are able to get long histories of previous results. From these histories we can see which numbers have been drawn more frequently over the past given period of time, and deduce a probability that this number may be drawn more rarely in future. Conversely, numbers that have been rarely drawn have a probability of being drawn more often. That's what probability is all about - in simple terms, of course!

Now, how to apply this to effectively select numbers? Well, this is the trick of course! Knowing how to correctly interpret these histories, select smaller grouping of numbers more likely to be drawn, and add a level of 'randomness' that is inherent in all lotteries, is the key to changing how you select your numbers and increasing the probability that you will win the lottery each week - even if it is not the big jackpot!

For example, if we look at the number 43 (chosen completely randomly) and analyze its history of being drawn over the past 26 weeks against all other numbers, we may discover that it has been drawn rarely and is sitting with a pool of numbers at the bottom of the list. We may infer that over the next 26 weeks this number is more likely to be drawn - note that I say 'more likely' - in probabilities, nothing is certain!
